Glass containers for pharmaceutical use are intended to come into direct contact with pharmaceutical products. The material of the glass container is hot pressed low expansion borosilicate glass, which has a high hydrolytic resistance and a high thermal shock resistance due to the chemical composition of the glass itself.
The inner surface of glass serum vials may be treated to improve hydrolytic resistance. The outer surface of glass serum vials may be treated to reduce friction or for protection against abrasion or breakage. The outer surface treatment is such that it does not contaminate the inner surface of the container.
Glass may be colored to provide protection from light by the addition of small amounts of metal oxides and is tested as described in Spectral Transmission for Colored Glass Containers.
In experiments that combine specific glass particle testing with surface glass hydrolysis resistance testing, hydrolysis resistance is determined by the amount of alkali released by the glass under specified conditions. When using more corrosion-resistant glass materials, the alkali content is very low.
Our serum vials comply with their respective characteristics and surface anti hydrolysis specifications, and are classified as Class I, II, or III glass. Class I glass serum vials are suitable for medicinal purposes.
